The guiding principle behind the PODSS system has been to develop a technology that helps disrupt the criminal activity of drug dealers and gangs. By developing an overt camera system, criminal activity has proven to be dramatically reduced, along with violent crimes that are often associated with such activity.
While many major cities are experiencing increasing violent crime activity, cities that have deployed PODSS are seeing a significant reduction in violent crime rates.
One comment that arises regarding the effectiveness of PODSS is that the system simply moves criminal activity from one location to another. While it is true that PODSS can have the effect of moving some forms of crime out of one area—only to reoccur in adjacent locations—statistics have shown that displaced criminal activity results in higher arrest rates. This is due to the fact that criminals are less comfortable in unfamiliar surroundings.
